Bartolomé de Las Casas was an eye-witness of the cruelties and pain brought forth to the destruction of the Indians. The Spaniards arrived at San Salavador where they later met the Indians. In seeing the Spaniards for the first time, the Indians thought they were “gods” descended from heaven. Bartolomé explains in depth how the Spaniards mistreated the many innocent Indians while they were there. Because the Indians thought the Spaniards were “gods,” they brought no harm to them. The Spaniards on the other hand, were the first to assault the Indians by abusing them with unimaginable acts like, ripping up the bellies of women and tearing them alive in pieces. When I read this I was shocked that a human being could actually put up with doing something so nasty. It makes me wonder what brought them to do such a thing. My own view is that the Spaniards could have worked something out with the Indians so this cruel act wouldn’t have happened. This clearly shows how the Spaniards took advantage of the Indians kind hearts and took over.
