After reading “English Composition as a Happening” by Charles Deemer, I agree with Charles on how he wants to change the education system, mostly English Composition. Charles does not like how education and the English Composition course are being taught. For example, instead of having the teacher stand in front of the podium and lecture the class, he thinks that it would be better for the teacher to let the students participate in class instead of listening and taking what the teacher says and not considering it. He refers to this as the “happening.” The reason of the happening is to remove the old way of teaching and have the teacher interact with the students. In this article, Charles supports his opinions with quotes from people and books that also agree with him. I, myself also agree with him on this because even after he wrote this article teachers still continue to “hide” behind their podium instead of actually interacting with the whole class.
